Navigating Round-the-Clock Home Care Options
When an elderly loved one begins wandering at night, experiencing sundowning, or risking falls during bathroom visits, daytime care is no longer sufficient. Ontario families must choose between two primary 24-hour strategies: overnight care shifts or live-in care.
Option A: Dedicated Overnight Shifts (Active Awake vs. Sleepover)
- Awake Overnight: The caregiver remains completely awake for 8 to 12 hours (e.g., 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM), providing constant supervision, toileting, repositioning, and medication prompting. Ideal for advanced dementia and palliative care.
- Sleepover Overnight: The caregiver sleeps in the home but is available for 1 to 2 brief wake-ups. This option offers a discounted flat rate.
Option B: Live-In Caregiver Arrangements
A live-in caregiver resides on the premises, usually working 4 to 5 days per week. Under Ontario labor regulations, families must provide a private bedroom with a door, suitable meals, and guaranteed uninterrupted sleep time (at least 8 consecutive hours). Live-in care provides exceptional continuity of care at a more predictable monthly budget.
