Creating a Fall-Proof Environment for Aging in Place
According to Public Health Ontario, falls account for over 85% of injury-related hospitalizations among seniors aged 65 and older. Fortunately, the vast majority of in-home falls can be prevented with simple, cost-effective environmental modifications.
Bathroom Modifications (The Highest Risk Zone)
- Install Wall-Anchored Grab Bars: Suction-cup bars are unreliable. Professional stud-anchored grab bars inside the shower stall and adjacent to the toilet are essential.
- Walk-In Shower Conversion or Transfer Bench: Stepping over high bathtub walls is a major trip hazard. Use a sliding transfer bench or low-barrier shower floor.
- Non-Slip Adhesive Strips: Apply textured non-slip coatings to tubs and wet flooring zones.
Hallways, Stairs & Lighting
- Eliminate Throw Rugs: Remove all loose area rugs or tape edges securely with heavy-duty carpet tape.
- Motion-Activated Nightlights: Place ambient plug-in motion lights along pathways between the bedroom and bathroom.
- Dual Handrails on Staircases: Ensure handrails extend beyond the top and bottom steps.
