Government Financial Assistance for Healthcare in Ontario
Many Ontario families are unaware that provincial programs exist to offset substantial out-of-pocket costs for prescription medications, walkers, wheelchairs, and respiratory equipment. Understanding how to qualify can save thousands of dollars every year.
1. The Trillium Drug Program (TDP)
The Trillium Drug Program is an essential safety net for Ontario households with high prescription drug costs relative to their net income. Regardless of age, if prescription costs exceed approximately 3% to 4% of household net income after taxes, Trillium covers the eligible balance.
- Application Window: The program year runs from August 1 to July 31. Applications can be submitted retroactively.
- Senior Advantage: Seniors aged 65+ are automatically covered under the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) with a low annual deductible ($100 or $0 for low-income seniors).
2. The Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
The Ontario Ministry of Health's ADP covers up to 75% of the cost of approved mobility and medical aids, including custom wheelchairs, power scooters, walkers, oxygen equipment, and CPAP machines.
Tip: An assessment must be completed by an ADP-registered authorizer (such as an OT or Physiotherapist) before purchasing the equipment.
